This is the second part in a series on The Success Formula:  How to Start and Finish Any Goal.  Please read the first part if you haven't done so.

The Middle

The second part towards successfully achieving a goal is to maintain the drive necessary to see the goal through to its completion.  This is the "fuel" needed to finish your goal.  This fuel is self-discipline.  The greater your discipline, the greater your chances that you'll achieve your goal.  Many people start their goals - but fail to complete them.  These people rely on their motivation or courage to start a goal yet without proper discipline, they fall short of their mark.  They simply run out of "gas."

With the success of my last 90 day Body Transformation Challenge, I have been getting many questions about how to start a training program. Many people have asked me how they can get into better shape. The problem is they don't know where to begin. Or they don't know how to keep themselves motivated long enough to complete their fitness goals. These people start their fitness training with the best intentions, yet after a few days or weeks, their enthusiasm wears off - and they feel dejected.

I began writing this article with the focus on how to start and complete a fitness training routine. The more I wrote, the more I realized that these rules can be used to accomplish any goals. So instead of a how-to fitness article, this article will give you the fundamentals on what it takes to set and successfully complete any goal.

The process of achieving your goals can be summarized in my Success Formula: Successful Goal = Actions * Discipline.

How to Manage Stress, Part 3: Increase Your Stress Capacity

increasing-stress-capacity

This is the third part in a series on managing stress.  The first article gave you an overview on what stress is and the two different ways to decrease stress in your life.  The second article looked more closely at the first way to decrease stress, which is to lower stress input. In this third article on managing stress, I will discuss the second way of lowering stress in your life - that is to increase your stress capacity.  From the first two articles, we can conclude:

  • For any given system (your body), input = stress = load = demand.
  • For every input (stress), there is an equal amount of ouput (work).
  • For any given amount of stress (load) that your body takes in, its ability to handle that load is dependent on its stress capacity.
  • In order for your body to maintain balance, all input that is taken in must have a corresponding output - that is equal in force (energy).
  • Stress capacity is the total amount of work your body can produce.
  • Your body is an energy convertor, transforming input energy (stress) into output energy (work).
  • The more efficient you are, the less "wasted" energy your body produces.

How to Manage Stress Part 2: Lower Your Stress Input

stress-avoidance

This is the second part in a series on managing stress.  The goal of this series is two-fold.  The first is to give you a better understanding of what stress is and how it fits into your lives and secondly how you can use this understanding to better cope with the stresses in your life.  Part one explained the first goal, so if you haven't already read the first part, then please read it first.   From the first article, we can up with some conclusions:

  • For any given system (our body), input = stress = load = demand.
  • For every input (stress), there is an equal amount of ouput (work).
  • For any given amount of stress (load) that your body takes in, its ability to handle that load is dependent on its stress capacity.
  • Stress capacity is the total amount of work our body can produce.
  • Our body is an energy converter, transforming input energy (stress) into output energy (work).
  • The more efficient you are, the less "wasted" energy your body produces.
  • In order for your body to maintain balance, all input that is taken in must have a corresponding output - that is equal in force (energy).
  • There are only two fundamental ways to decrease stress:
    1. Lower input
    2. Increase load (stress) capacity

How to Manage Stress Part 1: A New Perspective on Stress

How to Manage Stress Part 1: A New Perspective on Stress

Stress - just thinking about this word causes much - well, stress.  It causes much pain and anguish.  We feel it both emotionally and physically.  Stress is all around us.  We hear about it all the time:

"Stress causes health disease."
"Lower your stress and you will live longer."
"Stress kills."

What exactly is stress?  Stress is not something we can hear, taste or smell.   In fact, we often don't feel stress until it has turned into a serious physical ailment.  There's so much talk about "stress" yet it is so hard to identify, to grasp, to understand.  How are you suppose to lower your stress, when you don't even know what it is?

In this 3 part series,  I will offer you my viewpoint of what stress is, where it comes from and how you can use this understanding to better manage the stress in your life.  My goal is to give you a new and different perspective of stress.

After reading these articles, I hope you will will look at stress in a more enlightening way.
